Kiko Kostadinov keeps finding new ways to make ASICS look like it came from a slightly stranger, much cooler timeline. The latest comes from OTTO 958, the art-meets-fashion project Kostadinov runs with Los Angeles gallery Morán Morán, and it's called the ASICS GEL-BELARRAOTTO. After an early exclusive at Dover Street Market Paris and otto958.com on October 17, it goes global tomorrow, Wednesday, October 21. ASICS lists the US drop on its releases page for 11 AM ET, and the retail price is $190.
The headline feature is the gaiter. The upper is lightweight ripstop mesh, and a detachable gaiter in the same fabric turns it from a low-top into something closer to a soft boot. According to OTTO 958, the lines borrow from the vintage ASICS STORMRACER Junior, while the sole comes from the DESTAQUE K FF TF, a football boot built for artificial grass, hard pitches and indoor futsal courts. The colorway is Obsidian Grey / Kelp (style 1203B300-020), with lime accents on the lining and trim and OTTO958 lettering down the side.
It follows a run of football-inspired shoes from OTTO 958 and ASICS, including the big-flapped GEL-FLEXKEE PRO in 2023 and the GEL-SD ARZACHOTTO slip-on with its boot-style stitching, as Sneaker Wars points out. The BELARRAOTTO isn't built for match day, though. It's a daily shoe that happens to look like it could take a corner kick.
Our take: the gaiter is the whole personality here, and it's a good one. Wear it up and you've got a slouchy, almost technical boot for colder days. Take it off and it's a low-slung grey runner with a little lime sneaking out of the edges. It's weird in the way Kiko fans want, and the grey and kelp keep it wearable for everyone else. Just don't be surprised if somebody asks whether you're heading to five-a-side.
